Devotion
Will you marry me? My stomach somersaults as I realise, I am engaged, betrothed, affianced. People say little girls dream of this moment their whole lives, but for most of mine, I feigned no interest in the complexities of marriage. Nor did I ever fantasise about becoming a mother or raising children.

Katie woke with a shudder. Sitting up, she stared into the darkness of her bedroom and scanned its shadowy crevices. The full moon leaked between the gap in the curtains, casting dim light around the room. Something had woken her; she was sure of it. But everything in the room was as it should be; nothing looked out of place. She sat in silence and listened for any sign her children might be out of bed, hearing nothing unusual over the rhythmic snoring of her husband.

Ryan lay on his stomach on the living room floor with his legs in the air. Crayon in hand, he focused on adding colour to his best drawing to date. He couldn't wait to show his mother when she returned home, but he had to finish it first. Desperately seeking the full 'wow factor' when he showed her. He knew she would be ever so proud of him, and if he was lucky, it might just gain pride of place on the refrigerator.

Her heart thundered, threatening to give away her position as she listened nervously.

Allhallows Eve
My entry into 'The Spooky Season Challenge' by Sheree Crawford - a VSS community challenge. Leaves crunch underfoot As shoes dash from door to door Nervous excitement fills the air Buckets filled with sweets galore A crisp chill weighs heavy in the air Autumn's in full swing As Halloween entices children And all the excitement it will bring Jump scares catch them in their rush To reach the next home participating In their costumes and their make-up Ghosts and goblins they are faking A night full of the macabre Celebrated in the streets Children dressed as monsters To be encouraged on by sweets To participate you must embrace The sinister and the scary The late-night campfire stories That leave you feeling wary The only night when children seek The dark and the obscene Fake bloodied bones and entrails The grotesque and the unclean It's all done in good spirits On the sacred Allhallows Eve Whilst neighbours in competition Pull tricks out from up their sleeves The atmosphere is rife with joy As children race along with tired feet Parents trail along behind them Hoping tonight they'll surely sleep As memories are slowly etched Into their souls forever For when they were young and innocent They went hunting ghouls together.

Prey
Her blood-curdling scream echoed through the woods; startled birds leapt from their branches, soaring into the sky above. Blood pounded in her ears as Amy stood trembling, frozen in agony at the perpetual fear of looking down. White hot pain shook her body; nausea quickly followed. She refused to look, temporarily paralysed with shock. Unaware she was swaying, her eyes rolled, threatening to send her tumbling to the forest floor. She gritted her teeth, forcing every agonised breath between them and focused on not passing out.
