Around 5:00 PM every evening, I hear the chorus of the witching hour: “my tummy’s hungry!” My 3-year-old twin toddlers—without missing a beat—always come clawing at me for food right before dinner time. You know what the amazing part is, though? Whenever I sing out through the house, “dinner’s ready!” shortly after (and serve their plates that include new vegetables), their tummies all of a sudden seem like they’re not hungry after all. This used to be our every day. But I’ve come up with a better, fool-proof game plan and have some tips to share with all of you toddler parents!

How We Got Our Toddler to Keep Her Glasses On
Complete and utter denial--that’s what I was in when the pediatrician told me in January 2019 that my then 15-month-old girl twin, Joules, was farsighted in her right eye and needed to be seen by an ophthalmologist. The pediatrician had just done a standardized vision screening (normally performed at that age) that revealed the initial results. I remember telling myself that the doctor’s assessment was probably just off and that the eye doctor would tell us that everything was okay. I mean, Joules had always acted like she could see perfectly. So, there had to be a mistake, right?

How to Get Your Toddler to Wear a Face Mask
After our not even 3-year-old twin toddlers wore their face masks for roughly 5 hours straight while we flew cross-country recently, I knew our pandemic travel experience was successful. But we didn’t just slap the masks on their faces that same day without first figuring out how to make them follow the airport/airlines’ face mask-wearing rules. We were STRATEGIC! And our strategy led to two little kids complying with the rules from start to finish.

When I made the decision to postpone preschool for my twins after COVID-19 hit, I was definitely overcome with a mix of frustration and happiness. I’ve truly loved teaching Ames and Joules new things at home, but—to be totally honest—it can be a little tiring when there’s nobody else to help. For the past ~3 years, the twins have been at home with me. They’ve never been to a mother’s day out, daycare, or any type of organized schooling during the week. We tentatively plan to put the twins in preschool this next Spring 2021—but, until then, I am doing what I can to keep Ames and Joules learning at home. That said, through research online, reading reviews, and talking with other moms, I’ve found some very useful educational material to ease the process of keeping my twins learning at home in the interim.
