Having a well-rounded healthy family includes various aspects. Mind, body, and soul are all important factors in the pursuit of health. We have to work on it in ourselves, but also in our children, if we want a healthy family. It is important to be able to hone into our child’s needs and help them achieve that balance of mind, body, and soul.

Mental Health

This is often overlooked and rarely understood by most people, but if you don’t take care of your mental health, then your physical and spiritual health will suffer. Some mental health disorders are hereditary, so get to know your family tree and ask your family members and your spouse’s family members if there is any history of mental illness. This will just give you a starting point, but you will still need to see a mental health provider. Some of the more serious mental health conditions, such as depression or bipolar disorder, may not show up until your children get to be teenagers, so this is something that you will have to keep a close eye on until they are adults. Events during your child’s teenage years can trigger depression, but there is medication available that will help them get through it. Eating disorders are a common mental health issue for teenagers, especially female teenagers. If you notice your child running to the bathroom after meals or if you notice sudden weight loss, you need to see medical attention immediately.

Physical Health

Regular checkups at the doctor of course are mandatory, but you will have to be proactive in other areas of your family’s health. Your family's eating habits is one of the most important things that you will need to pay attention to. It’s easy to run through the fast food drive thru lines, but if you do this too much, you will see your children gain wait and struggle with obesity. Once you gain weight, especially children, it’s hard to reshape eating habits and lose the weight. How children eat when they are young will carry over into their adult life. Set a good example for them and teach them how to eat healthy and make good choices in food. Portion control is another area that you will need to be consistent in. We as Americans overeat, and our portions are usually too big. A scale in your home is a good way for you to check your child's weight and make sure that they are not over doing it. Keep your family active by planning activities that involve physical exercise. Anything outdoors is a great way to keep your family moving.

Cleanliness

Kids are great, but they are not always the cleanest. They will jump in mud, roll in the grass, share germs with friends, and, at the end of all that, refuse to take a shower! With little kids, it can be hard to persuade them to bathe, but making sure your home and family is clean is essential for a happy family. Fleas and lice are a big problem for children because they love all animals and are always trying to be around them. You do not want your kids to track these pests into your home. Making sure that your children and your home don't have these critter is a top priority.

Spiritual Health

Being a well-rounded individual includes your spiritual well-being. You have to feed your soul as much as you feed your body. There are many different ways to feed your soul and maintain balance within your spiritual being. Meditation is a great way to let all of the stress exit your body and let good positive thoughts, feelings, and energy enter your body. You are what you believe, so you have to believe in yourself. Believe in goodness, kindness, and light in this world. Get rid of all the negative thoughts and vibes. Another way to balance your inner self is to be surrounded by like-minded people. People who think like you and are like you will give you peace and calmness. They will share the same interest, opinions and beliefs as you. This will fill your "cup" rather than empty it. Another way is to give yourself verbal and positive affirmations. Look in the mirror and tell yourself the good things about yourself out loud. This will bring positivity and happiness. It will facilitate room for growth. You will notice that once you center your life everything will fall into place.
