How I Do It and Stay Sane

Hi, I’m Meghan. I’m 22 years old and a mom of twin girls who are 14 months. I am engaged to the love of my life; we have a golden doodle puppy and a Beta fish. This is a blog on how I work, keep house, stay calm and most importantly stay sane!

First off, I work part-time at a chain men’s hair salon! I love my job and could never give up what I do. So the first thought when we found out we were pregnant with twins was “what do I do about my job?” We ended up deciding working part-time was best. I get to be at home and spend time with my girls during the day and in the evening I work. My mom normally watches them in between me and my fiancé’s shifts, so we don’t have to pay for daycare and we get a little extra money through the month which is very nice.

Keeping the house is definitely my biggest challenge! Ever! I feel like I’m always cleaning, folding laundry, or doing dishes! This stuff will never end no matter what! I try to keep everything, at least, pretty tidy with the continuous laundry and a running dishwasher always going. I take about 10-20 minutes while my kids are keeping themselves occupied to fold laundry and put dishes away! It doesn’t take that long and I still get to spend time with my kids; while they nap I get ready for work and clean up the house! And on my days off I go in and deep clean as in sweep, mop, vacuum, sanitize, clean bathrooms, and so on and so forth! It’s a really nice way to know that on this day I mentally prepare myself for what I need to do before I go anywhere or do anything!

Staying calm... this one is probably the hardest for me. Let’s face it, this one is hard for all of us at some point. You have watched Trolls or Moana a million times (it doesn’t matter how big of a Disney fan you are the same movie on repeat for the 500th time gets irritating). You have a child or two or five, yelling because the lunch isn’t cooking fast enough for their “starving” little bellies (because they haven’t been snacking and eating all day and we never feed them. Right?), well that’s how it seems! If you feel yourself getting aggravated and flustered, the thing that helps me most is putting myself away mentally for a minute or so by taking deep breaths and thinking about you for a second. What are you going to do when they go to sleep tonight? Take a hot bath, watch a special on Netflix, break into that favorite bottle of wine in the fridge. Whatever it is, make yourself look forward to something. You will be surprised when you open your eyes and feel like a totally different person!

Staying sane is the secret of all secrets! Give yourself time and don’t feel bad about it! EVER! My favorite time ever is my “me time.” I take an hour or even two when the kids (and the fiancé) go to bed, it’s just me (and the dog). I don’t have to worry about anything but myself and whether or not I’m going to pour that second glass of wine! Mamas make sure you are taking care of yourself. It’s the most important thing in the world. Without you taking care of yourself your house won’t be in order because you won’t!

I hope that this helps at least one Mama! All of these things are so important but it’s so hard to find time for anything! I understand completely it never ends until you have an empty nest and from my understanding it doesn’t end there either. Just make sure you are taking time for your kids. You only get 18 short years to spend with your baby. If you don’t get the dishes done one day, don’t worry about it. Rome wasn’t built in a day and I promise your house will not collapse if your dishes are not done or your laundry isn’t folded! Just breathe, relax, and love yourself as much as your kids and know that, that is okay!

Sincerely,

Meghan May. Twin Mama!
