To My Babies

We're doing our best.

My babies. My sweet, sweet babies.

It seems like just yesterday I was staring at two pink lines, wondering how the hell I was going to do this. I was afraid for you. I was afraid that I wouldn't be good enough for you. I was afraid the world wouldn't be good enough to you. I was afraid your Daddy and I wouldn't know how to take care of you. But here we are, killing it.

I have spent the past 3 whole years worrying over you two, and I will spend the rest of my life doing just the same. I will worry about bullies. I will worry about boyfriends and girlfriends. I will worry about whether you can take on the world.

It is my goal for you two to know that you are loved beyond words. At any given moment throughout your life, I want you to know that your Daddy and I are your biggest fans. We love you more than we love ourselves, more than we love each other, and more than anyone else ever will.

We want you to know that you can do absolutely anything you put your mind to. That when people tell you that you can't, not to believe them. That when you face an obstacle, you will find a way around it. And if you have trouble, we will help you, no matter what. We are your family. You are strong, because we are strong, and we take care of our own.

I hope that you know your grandparents and great-grandparents are still teaching us how to do this whole parenting thing, and that we may not always be perfect. I hope you know that we have the best of intentions, but that sometimes, as humans do, we falter. I hope that you know that even when we screw up, we only want the best for you. I hope that you know that at the end of the day, everything we do is for you.

Sometimes, this life is hard. Being a parent is hard. Being a student is hard. Being twenty-something is hard. Being a full time employee is hard. Running your own side business is hard. Being married is hard. I do all of these things every. single. day. Your daddy- with two jobs, a heart of gold, and the patience of Job- works his hands to the bone every single day (and sometimes nights, too). Unfortunately, sometimes this means Daddy misses bedtime. Sometimes Mama locks herself in her bedroom, for a few hours of silence, to get her school work done. Sometimes when all you want to do is play, all we want to do is take a nap. Sometimes we just suck.

Please know that we are doing our best.

We do these things because want you to have the life you deserve. We want you to have a better childhood than we did. We want to give you everything you want and need. We want you to grow up and have fond memories to look back on. We want to raise children who do not have to heal from their childhood.

Fisher, my first little love, you have your Mama's soul. You are so strong willed. Independent. You are a firecracker. I hope you never lose that. I hope you grow up with the same quick wit and sense of self that I have always had. The world needs more people like us, kid. Keep on keepin' on.

And Clara Hazel... My sweet CH. Fatty Patty. Sazel. Sister. Hunny. You are your Daddy made over in all the right ways. You can speak when you want to, but you choose to be silent. You are loving and kind, but your temper is a Cat 5. You wobble through the world stealing hearts (and food) like you own the place... Hell, you may as well.

My babies... It is your world, we are just in it. And we wouldn't have it any other way.
