Thoughtful Mother’s Day Gifting Ideas for All Tastes

This year I’m determined to invest time finding something extra special for my mum to mark Mother’s Day on March 12, so I’ve started researching gifting ideas nice and early. ‘Special’ doesn’t need to mean expensive; there are plenty of ways to show your mum how much you care.

The saying "it’s the thought that counts" is often used negatively in response to someone receiving an inadequate gift, implying that the effort that’s gone into giving something is more valuable than the gift itself. But I believe there’s no reason why the thought that goes into giving shouldn’t be as wonderful as the gift itself. That’s why I’ve done a little exploration and come up with some alternative gifting ideas for different "types of mum" that demonstrate the thoughtfulness that’s gone into choosing them—I hope you find it useful!

The Sentimental Mum

If your mum is the sentimental type, little else conveys just how much you care than taking the time and effort to send a handwritten letter to encapsulate the appreciation you have for her. Not only is it fun and therapeutic to write a letter, it also encourages you to really think before you write, making it so much more meaningful (and inexpensive!). Mother and son/daughter are both winners! If you’re not sure where to start with writing a personalised letter, here are some handy tips to get you started. Why not really surprise Mum and send her a letter she can keep and treasure forever?

The Arty Mum

If art’s your mum’s thing then she may appreciate some wall art that makes a statement about her taste. If you really know and understand your mum, wall art is an incredibly thoughtful gift that expresses just how much you "get her."

Whether it be abstract paintings, modern pop art, cubism, or surrealism that she enjoys, there are endless prints out there to suit all tastes. If Mum is into photography, a print by a favourite photographer is a wonderful gift. For example, I recently came across Slim Aarons prints, a fab choice for those who appreciate iconic imagery of celebrities in their heyday.

The Adventurous Mum

We often tend to save adventure gifts for the men in our lives—but women also enjoy such activities_so why not treat the more daring mum to an adventure experience day that will truly surprise and get her adrenaline pumping? Skydiving, climbing, zorbing, caving and bungee jumping are just some of the pursuits on offer. Ditch the flowers and chocolates and get her something truly different and memorable!

The Mum Who Loves to Shop And Lunch

If your mum appreciates a spot of retail therapy, then a day out shopping with you means quality time spent together and the option for her to choose her own gift—everyone’s a winner! Making a full day of it and booking somewhere to eat will no doubt earn you some extra brownie points too, but instead of going for your standard lunch venue, why not book something a bit different to add that element of surprise for a memorable Mother’s Day treat?

The Home Loving Mum

If your mum likes to keep a lovely home, then getting her something to show it off even more is a thoughtful idea. I’m not talking about breaking the bank and buying her new furniture, but perhaps some quirky gifts with a difference to give the home a touch of "unique" would be both well-considered and memorable. You could get a stand-alone statement piece or perhaps mix up a few smaller pieces depending on your budget to create a package of unusual home accessories that your mum will love.

The Hard to Choose for Mum

A nicely put together hamper of goodies can really show thoughtfulness in your gifting efforts, especially if you find it hard to choose specific gifts for your mum. Whether it be a basket of homemade food treats (get the kids involved if Mum is a granny too!), a collection of your mums favourite makeup products, or a "pamper hamper" of lotions, potions, and facial masks, building a basket of personalized treats for Mum will no doubt impress the hardest to please mums!

Whatever your mum is into, there are many alternative present ideas out there for all budgets. A little bit of thought can go a long way! I hope my ideas have inspired you.
