Every generation new names come in style, and some other names go out of style. Meanwhile... Hannah has been a common name for a very long time. To get to my point, I must be getting old because the common baby names of 2019 sound strange to me. I know that once these kids grow up that their names will be the norm and my name will be considered... old. Like anyone named Linda. Not Beatrice however, apparently that is making a come back.
If you find your name or your baby's name on this, don't panic! I'm sure it's a very common name. The only reason it is being called 'strange' is because it is different compared to popular baby names the years before it. Also, I'm sure there are a lot of people who would makes changes to this list if they had the chance. In fact, send me a tweet if you have any ideas!
1. Bunny
The name Bunny started increasing in popularity as the game Fortnite suddenly took over many gamer's attention. Yup, that's right. The name Bunny is after a character in the game Fortnite. My friend Sam is named after the Same in Bewitched, so it makes sense that the game has inspired baby names. However, sometimes I think people forget that not everyone plays Fortnite, so not everyone will understand the reference. Bunny is an adorable nickname... but as an actual name itself?
2. Garnet
Garnet is a gem, and a very gorgeous, deep red gem. There has been a sudden increase in baby names for all kinds of gems, including Emerald and Saphire. However, when I hear Garnet all I picture is an old dusty bonnet for some reason...? I think that might just be me.
3. Leviathan
Leviathan is also inspired by Fortnite. However, Leviathan isn't the name of a character itself, but it's the name of one of the colour schemes for a character. Oh, and the character is a fish in a bowl on top of a body...
Here he is!
4. Tyrion
I'm a Game of Thrones fan and I love the character Tyrion... but it was not a common name before Game of Thrones, and you have to watch the show to know about it. I have a weird feeling some of these babies will grow up to want to be call 'Ty' for short. With that said, I am completely just guessing.
5. Posie
It's arguably the most common baby name for girls in 2019.
All it makes me think about is that nursery rhyme: "Ring around the Rosie, Pocket Full of Posies." It turns out that song has a really dark meaning behind it.
6. Xavier
As in Professor Xavier from X-Men. This isn't the first time I've seen this name pop up for newborns... however, this is the first time that Xavier has officially made the top 100 list in popular names for boys. So, it's starting to become a decently popular name now.
7. Ramirez
Also inspired by Fortnite. I wonder if FlyTrap and iKonik from Fortnite will become popular baby names too. Not to mention Zoey and Raven, those were already common names before Fortnite though.
I will admit to this though, the character Ramirez seems really cool from what I know about her.
8. Bear
Another fun trend that has been noticed for 2019 baby names, is names after animals. Fox, Hawk, and Koala also seem to be pretty popular this year too... I mean... compared to past years. Don't forget about Bunny, that name falls under this category too.
9. Esme
For a girl. It's an older vintage name that is making a comeback. I can't get any real proof of it, but I'm pretty sure it's because of the Netflix Original of A Series of Unfortunate Events. However, this is a first for me that people are naming their babies after the antagonist in shows. Seriously, Esme is not a nice person.
10. Khaleesi
This name is without a doubt from the HBO hit, TV series Game of Thrones. She is the character that rides the dragons and has gorgeous, but yet powerful dresses. The thing is... Khaleesi isn't actually her name, her name is Daenerys Targaryen. Khaleesi means queen in her husband's first language. You know, that forced arranged marriage that she did NOT want anything to do with at first in season one, then it somehow oddly turned romantic. Long story short, Khaleesi is probably not going to be a popular name anymore in the next few years... you know... because of season eight.
One Last Name: Rogue
I wanted to add this name for two main reasons. The first is that I think it's an awesome name, and if I had a baby girl I would genuinely think about naming her Rogue. However, she might ironically never listen to me... or her teachers. The second reason is because I was wondering why this name is all of a sudden becoming popular now? Inspired by Fortnite... or inspired by X-Men? It can be hard to tell, maybe it's both. However, my money is on Fortnite.
Like I just mentioned, I actually really like the sound of Rogue. I think it would be a cool name to have. I want to change my name to Rogue! With that said, I mentioned it to my boyfriend, and he shot the name down right away. Also, I think I scared him a bit because I'm not even pregnant or planning...
Hello. Nice to meet you! How are you? Hmm... this feels like a really one-sided conversation... why don't you follow me on social media, so I can get to know you too!
