Firstly, I'd like to begin by congratulating you if you are the parent or guardian of an Indigo Child. What a true honour and blessing it is to be granted the privilege of raising such an amazing person!

Although for many of you, I assume you’ve clicked on this article with a degree of curiosity. What exactly is an Indigo Child, you might be thinking... And do I have one? Am I one of the lucky ones?

Well read on, you’re about to find out!

What is an Indigo Child?

According to Wikipedia, Indigo children, according to a pseudoscientific New Age concept, are children who are believed to possess special, unusual, and sometimes supernatural traits or abilities.

But in my experience, what it really means is, your child might have a ‘knowing’ of certain topics, even though they are things you've never taught them. Many of them related to Esoteric subjects such as crystals, meditation, animals, or nature. Perhaps they’re very much drawn to Angels and communicate with them often.

Most Indigos are highly empathic and intuitive individuals and may have one or more of the following ‘Clair’- psychic gifts:

  • Clairvoyant (Clear Seeing – the most common of psychic gifts),
  • Clairsentient (Clear Feeling or the act of just ‘knowing’,
  • Claircognizent (Clear Knowing) is the ability to just know something without logic or facts.
  • Clairaudience (Clear Hearing) NB: It is important to note that often many people are misdiagnosed as being schizophrenic purely because they and their doctors misunderstand their gift. (This is not to say all people with schizophrenia are clairaudient and misdiagnosed.)
  • Clairgustance – (clear tasting) is an inner tasting; that is, tasting without actually putting anything into your mouth.

Indigo Children are unique

Aside from these natural gifts that Indigos possess, there are a few other things that make them unique.

They view the world differently to other people, and often feel things very deeply.

I do not believe it is possible to raise an Indigo Child the same as other children.

We need to nurture our Indigos, as they are sensitive souls. Discipline usually can’t be done in the standard way, and we as parents need to adapt our way of thinking. Attachment/Gentle Parenting is a very common way to raise Indigos, as it resonates on the same ‘love’ frequency that the Indigo’s put out.

Indigos tend to be ‘out of the box’ thinkers, not always content when things don’t go their way, and often will look for other ways to achieve their goal. More often than not though, it has to be for the greater good. Achieving things in a conniving manner does not usually sit well with them.

They like their world to be harmonious and as they grow older, making sure things are karmically right is important to them. If something they do unintentionally hurts others, it hurts them deeply and they will want to make it right.

Often, when Indigos become adults, they do not do well in typical 9-5 run of the mill type jobs. This is also true in schooling situations for many of them, and it is common for Indigos to prefer to be Homeschooled or Unschooled.

‘Different’ or ‘unique’ jobs will appeal to them, and even more so once they discover their purpose. Commonly, Indigos are ‘helpers’ and will get true joy from making another soul’s life better in some way.

Every Indigo is put on our earth with a Purpose, or ‘Life Plan.’ Often they don’t discover it until later in life, and as such may suffer from depression or anxiety until they do discover their purpose. We, as their parents and guardians, need to nurture these little souls and help them discover their path. While it’s true that only they can figure this out themselves, we can help them to enable this discovery. Nurturing their true gifts and their passions will bring them closer to their path. Meditation, and connecting with nature and their spirit guides is essential when they seek guidance as only when they are fulfilling their purpose, or their destiny, can they be truly happy. Once they are following their true path, sit back and watch the miracles that unfold, it’s a beautiful thing to watch, like a butterfly emerging from her cocoon, showing her true beauty to the world.

This is a topic that goes so much deeper than I can write in one short article, but I’d love to write more on this subject.
