When You Step up From Sister to Aunt

Aunt. This word has so much meaning. You have the role of mother without all the hassle, you're looked as the fun one, or sometimes the mean one. You get to spoil the heck out your nieces or nephews without the guilt. And at times you have to step up and discipline time to time. But what makes becoming an aunt the most special thing in your life? It is the fact that no matter what, a part of you will be in that child.

I’m Ashwini, 23, in a relationship, have had many roles as daughter, sister, friend, girlfriend, niece, granddaughter, ex, etc... Though the one role I had yet to play was the role of someone's AUNT. Now you may wonder, why does she want to be an aunt? It's no big deal. To me, it is. It is a role I have been wanting to fulfill for the longest time (apart from someday becoming a mom). Yeah, sure, my friends are pregnant, or already have kids, and they call me Aunty Ash. Though I love them all the same, the feeling of having your own sibling pregnant with a child is something else.

It is the moment when you know that this child is always going to be around, this one child is your family, your blood. You won't ever have to make plans to see the baby, you can just barge right in. Having said that, I am thrilled to finally become an aunt, and in many ways, I already am. My cousin, 26, is expecting her first baby. Gosh, hearing the news had me in happy tears for a whole day. My heart was feeling like it was going jump out and dance. I could already picture the cutest baby ever, holding in my arms and just giving it soo much love.

I called my cousin up to see how she was doing, of course she felt overwhelmed (it was a surprise to her to) and anxious. Now, that is natural, bringing a human into this world is a lot to deal with, but is also a miracle. I expressed to her how happy I was, and I couldn't wait to start shopping for clothes, picking out names, and just having a little one running around is joyous. Another cool thing, she is due two weeks from my birthday. How cool is that!

Not only is that baby going to be a Taurus like his/her cool aunt, but it is also going be just like me in many ways. I am so excited to finally become an aunt, and the love I have for this baby is unspeakable. I have a long ways before I get to meet my little human, but I love him/her so much already. I really hope she has a boy, I can just see how cute and handsome this baby is going to be.

Only an aunt...

It is true, only an aunt can fulfill the role of being like a mom, a dad, a sister, and a best friend. The bond between a child and its aunt is so special. I come from a vast family, I have soo many aunts that it is surely hard to keep count. But with the few that I have near me, I wouldn't change them for the world. Each of my aunts is special to me, where I can talk to them like a friend, sometimes get scolded like a daughter, and cared for like a sister.

Lately, I have been giving advice to my cousin on how to do certain things. Now, granted, I am not a mom myself, but being a previous student my advice comes in handy. I want that baby to be happy, healthy and I will do anything it takes to support my cousin. She has been doing great though, doing everything right and being slightly active. She has been taking such good care of herself.

As I come to end on my becoming an aunt, I just have to say that is surely is the best feeling in the world. I can relate to those who are aunts and I can see how becoming an aunt has hit me with reality that, dang, we are all really growing up. It only gets even more real from here.
