All of the Mixed Emotions That You Can Handle

"Why are you doing that?"

"Nope. Put it back."

"This is mine, not yours.”

“Give it back, please. Thank you.”

This is the conversation that I have had with my children since the dawn of time (Well, at least for the past 12 years). I have had to discuss, debate, argue, and reason with the children that I had decided to conceive — for subjects that I never thought would be an issue. Believe me, it can be an ISSUE.

All children have a knack of being the most curious creatures on this planet. And I mean ALL types of children. It starts out with "the crawl and reach"… slowly turning into the "take it and talk about it later when you get caught" routine. There is always the middle ground where lies all of the endless combinations of how you lose sleep as a parent, but that would keep me writing this all day. I would, but I have children to feed tonight.

Babies are the best at the age old concept of the "What is that, Mom? Never mind, I can figure it out myself.” It is that feeling when you reach a state of calm and collectiveness – until reality hits that you have kids, and you should not be feeling this way. That "feeling," my friends, is called "parental intuition" – the concept of knowing that your child has achieved the goal of getting into something that they have no business being in. If you happen upon this depth of perception as a parent, do yourself a favor and RUN to the child near you. Check if they are alive and safe, if only just to ease your troubled mind. Parenting is not for the weak of heart.

Babies. This is the stage where all of the cuteness sinks in. In a way, I figure that God (or whatever higher power that you believe) decided to sprinkle… no, smother that adorable ingredient all over babies. He felt that there will be such a large amount of “Why did you do that?!?” happening in the later years that we would need those mental reels of cuteness to let it go. And, BOY, you will need to LET IT GO when it comes to antics that will definitely arise in the future. (Did Disney’s Frozen pop up in your head? – If so, you’re welcome. Lol.)

Cute little fingers. Cute little toes. All of the things that lead to that cute little diaper bearing a gift for the hardworking parents, and the lack of sleep that will seem endless. The work that comes in behind having children is a must, in order to make sure that you are moving towards the development of a good citizen. Babies are the beginning of a slew of experiences and memories that you will come to rely on and cherish as the years pass.

Look forward to the coos, the smiles, and all of the characteristics that make your baby special. You will see that they grow older and larger faster during these years. Please take notice to all of the baby sizes that are provided in stores, and all other sites and programs that provide baby gear. Notice the large turnaround of infant products. This is a big sign that the suffering that you are in now (or will be experiencing), and the pure exhaustion that you are going through, will notalways last.

Just remember everyone: this stage of parenthood is the easy part. Having the baby is actually the EASY part. It may seem like a whirlwind going in, but it is worth all of the precious agony. Because ultimately, if you haven’t heard, toddlers are where the REAL fun begins.

But that is a whole other article.
