The Day You Went Away

March 4, 2002, I found out that my grandma had passed away. I thought it was all a dream, until I saw the look on my mom's face. All I could do was lay on the floor and cry all night long. I loved my grandma so much. Every time I would go visit her, she and I would go out to eat and have a very good day together. She spoiled me to death. My grandma taught me how to cook a lot of her best recipes. My grandma was a very short, funny lady. She got along with everybody. All her neighbors loved her. She never had problems with anybody. My mom and I cherish so many memories of her.

So when we heard about her death, we packed up our things and went to Michigan for my grandma's funeral. When we got there, we went to visit my uncle at his job. Then we met my mom's siblings at the funeral house to view my grandma's body. When I walked in the room, I saw a lot of flowers. And my beautiful grandma was all dressed up looking nice with her make up on. The first thing I did was smelled the flowers, then I slowly walked up to my grandma. As I looked down at my beautiful grandma, I kinda started to chuckle, because it looked like she was fast asleep. I thought this was all a prank. My grandma loved to prank and joke around on people. I just kept saying, "I'm going to open my eyes and I will wake up next to my grandma." As I blinked my eyes really fast, it finally hit me that it wasn't a dream. My grandma is gone. I finally just kissed her on the cheek and said, "I love you, Grandma! Good bye, Grandma."

After we went to see my grandma, we went back to her house where we were staying and we had the whole family over for dinner. My aunts, uncles, and cousins were all there to remember and celebrate my grandma's life. Everybody brought some food over, and we ate my grandma's last pecan pie that she made before she went to the hospital. A few days later, it was the day for my family to come together and say good bye to my grandma. My mom and I and my aunts, uncles, and cousins sat in the front row. As the funeral was going on, I just grabbed my mom's hand and squeezed it, and we started to cry. My mom and I just hugged each other and said, "I love you!" The choir sung my grandma's favorite song. Her favorite Gospel song was "Order My Steps." All I could do was cry and sing along with the choir. Then everybody talked about the memories that they had and remembered that they will cherish forever. Even though my grandma and grandpa got a divorce when my mom was a little girl, my grandpa still loved her, because they had children together and have grandchildren.

Then it was finally time to put her in the ground. My family and I got into the limo and headed to the cemetery. Before they put my grandma underground, they gave all the children and grandchildren a rose to remember my grandma. While they were putting my grandma in the ground, my grandma told us that she did not want us to be at the burial, because, she said, "That's not me going underground. My soul is in heaven. I don't want any of my kids or grandchildren to be my burial." So we went back to my grandma's house and started cooking dinner. Everybody came by and we laughed and cried and ate as one big family. I love and miss my grandma so much. I wish she was here to see me get married and have both of my kids. But I know she was there watching over me and my family. I hope to see her face and smile again. Rest in peace, Grandma!
